Sharon Ferguson, DO, Family Medicine physician at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene, has been presented with the inaugural Dr. Frank Carter Physician Excellence Award. The award recognizes a Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene physician, nominated by his/her peers, in the first ten years of practicing medicine who exemplifies the admirable character and professional traits that Dr. Frank Carter embodied: dedication, honor, tenacity, courage, conviction, and humility.

"Dr. Ferguson's care for her patients is thorough and focused on trying to solve problems and support individuals in their lives. She looks at the entire person and addresses issues in whatever realm they appear. She brings a demeanor of calm and kindness which sets the tone for colleagues, patients and their families. She is cheerfully available for consultation at any time and stays with the process until the patient's needs are fully met." shares Don Caruso, MD, MPH, CMO and Medical Director, Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene.

Dr. Frank Carter was the first primary care physician in a multidisciplinary group practice at the Keene Clinic, joining the clinic on January 1, 1960. He is remembered as a compassionate and wise caregiver, always putting his patients and their needs first. He was humble and unassuming, yet an outstanding role model for his colleagues. Dr. Carter passed away on June 2, 2012 and will be remembered for pioneering Primary Care at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene and setting healthcare standards which other medical providers emulate.

The Carter Fund for Innovation, Education and Excellence was established through a generous donation in memory of Dr. Frank Carter by his sister, Dr. Barbara Carter Moore in October 2012. A portion of the fund will be used as an honorarium for recipients of The Dr. Frank Carter Physician Excellence Award and the remaining funds will be available for projects and opportunities that enhance and support the Medical Home model of Primary Care at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene. Contributions to The Carter Fund for Innovation, Education and Excellence are accepted through The Cheshire Health Foundation.
