Dartmouth-Hitchcock CEO Dr. Jim Weinstein Reacts to the Supreme Court Decision

June 28, 2012

In upholding the legality of the Affordable Care Act, the Supreme Court made the right decision. Most importantly, this will give millions of people access to care. That will allow providers to focus on prevention and good health for these patients, rather than seeing them only in emergencies or when disease has reached an advanced or irreversibly chronic stage.

However, the ACA is only the beginning of a process to address the larger issue. To date, we have not done enough as a nation to address costs or the variations in outcomes and volumes of care, as the Dartmouth Atlas has repeatedly identified. We also need to have transparency as providers, so patients understand our outcomes and our charges. Until we have that transparency, we will not have real health reform.

We're committed to that transparency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. We're building a Sustainable Health System (not health care system) that puts the patient first and delivers safe, appropriate, highest quality care, at reasonable cost. That includes new models of care that work proactively to keep our population healthy, and when care is needed, to deliver it close to home. It also means increased collaboration among providers, as we're doing in the High Value Healthcare Collaborative we founded with Mayo Clinic, Intermountain, Denver Health, The Dartmouth Institute, and others.

The ACA, through funding innovative delivery and payment models and authorizing pilot projects to test concepts we've developed, such as shared decision making, will be an asset as we do this work. Regardless of the outcome today, the problem that existed yesterday still exists today. We are committed to driving solutions that help build tomorrow's patient-centered sustainable health system. Today's decision only reinforces our commitment to that path.
