Keene Keeping It’s Eye on Heart Safety

heart safetyOn Tuesday, February 14th, over 100 employees, business owners, family members, health care workers, professors and students participated in a free on site "Family and Friends CPR Anytime' training and gained skills needed to save lives when confronted with a cardiac emergency.

The tool is different than certified CPR training because it is a short, all-in-one kit that teaches community members the core skills of CPR, automated electronic defibrillator (AED) use and choking relief. This event was sponsored by the Heart Safe/Heart Strong Initiative, a community coalition of more than a dozen area partner groups that was initiated by Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene and is supported by Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL NH) and the charitable activities of the Keene Country Club’s Women Golfers. The initiative seeks to improve emergency cardiovascular care to increase heart attack and stroke survival rates and also to improve heart health and prevention of high blood pressure in an effort to reduce the need for CPR in the first place.

Over the past few years, Cheshire County residents and businesses have come together to develop and implement many initiatives supporting Vision 2020. These efforts have received national recognition, and include Keene being selected to represent New England in celebrating the inaugural year of first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative to reduce childhood obesity last February; and in December Keene and Swanzey were awarded New Hampshire HeartSafe designations by the American Heart Association for being communities that are improving access to emergency heart attack and stroke diagnosis and treatment.

Studies show that one in four people will someday find themselves in a situation where someone needs CPR. This CPR training gave our community members the tools they need to recognize a cardiac arrest and know the steps to help save lives. This day was a great service to our community and has helped us reach our goal of becoming the healthiest community!
