Go Green This Summer Season & Always!
Submitted by KSC Dietetic Intern & Champion, Kelly Berg
It’s no secret that we use a lot of the Earth’s resources everyday: oil, land, and water. But did you know that you make over 200 food related choices each day? Imagine the impact you could have by just making a few of those choices with conservation of resources in mind!
HOW you ask? There are a lot of ways that you can make greener food choices and they don’t have to be time consuming or costly. Below is a list of suggestions to make your routine a little greener!
3 Ways to Go GREEN:
1. Think Packaging: Bags in boxes, and boxes in bags. Today’s food commonly comes in excessive packaging. Think of ways you can reduce this! Buy groceries in bulk and use reusable grocery bags or plastic containers for convenience.
2. Shop locally: Food that is grown close to your kitchen table means less resources are needed to get it to your kitchen table. Meet farmers on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am- 2:00 pm at the Keene Farmer’s Market, open all summer long, behind the Colonial Theatre on Gilbo Ave.
3. Buy in season: Seasonal foods mean foods that are grown in the current season. The good news is New England’s growing season is here! Head to farms stands, CSA’s and local farmer’s markets in your area to see what’s in season!
