As part of the Farnum Rehabilitation Center, the clinic's goal is to emphasize quality of life and to help individuals achieve as much independence as possible.
- Held weekly, the Wheelchair Clinic serves all age groups and clients with a variety of disorders.
- Referrals can be made by clients, physicians, therapists, nurses or other caregivers. All referrals need to be accompanied by a physician's prescription.
The Farnum Wheelchair Clinic uses an interdisciplinary approach to meet the needs of clients. A physiatrist, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, directs the clinic and supervises the team which includes an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a medical equipment vendor, and a certified wound care nurse. Other healthcare professionals/consultants are available as needed.
A Personalized Client Evaluation
The process begins with a thorough evaluation regarding the client's physical abilities and mobility needs. Computerized pressure mapping may be used to assess seating needs for clients at risk for skin breakdown.
Based upon the evaluation, recommendations are made for the most appropriate equipment. All options recommended will take into consideration the client's comfort and mobility needs.
Once equipment is acquired, it will be delivered and fitted appropriately to the client. A follow-up visit at the Farnum Rehabilitation Center or a phone call will be made to ensure that the client is comfortable and satisfied with the equipment.
Payments for services and equipment such as wheelchair and seating systems are covered by many insurance plans. Pre-approval from a client's insurance plan is required prior to ordering any equipment through the Wheelchair Clinic. The Wheelchair Clinic team will be happy to assist with this process.
