Preterm Labor

Labor that starts before 37 weeks of pregnancy is considered preterm labor. It can sometimes be stopped if caught early.

Warning signs of premature labor
  • Uterine contractions. Your uterus feels like it is “balling up” or tightening 5 times or more in one hour.
  • Menstrual-like cramping.
  • Abdominal cramps with or without diarrhea.
  • Low backache near your tailbone.
  • Pelvic pressure. It feels like the baby is pushing down in your vagina.
  • Changes in vaginal discharge: You lose your mucus plug.
What to do
  • Empty your bladder
  • Lie down on left side and rest
  • Drink 2-3 large glasses of water
  • If symptoms aren’t gone in 1 hour call your provider
