When Does Palliative Care Begin?

Palliative Medicine seeks to relieve pain, suffering and symptoms, when there is a determination of an incurable illness. It considers a patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in an effort to help them determine goals for quality of living.

Palliative Care can work best when patients are provided with the opportunity, early in their illness, to explore their life goals, their requirements for wellness and well-being, and having control over their disease. They become aware that they may not be able to prevent symptoms of their illness, but that they can control how they deal with their condition. The patient directs their care with the support of their health-care team.

The Palliative Care team at the Cheshire Medical Center is available to provide education and guidance to physicians, staff, patients and their families.
