7 ways to prevent a second heart attack

Here are some tips from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and American Heart Association to help you get moving in the right direction and back to enjoying life.

  1. Take all medications as prescribed.
  2. Keep all your follow-up appointments with your provider.
  3. Start a cardiac rehabilitation program.
  4. Make lifestyle changes, such as being physically active, quitting smoking, eating a heart-healthy diet and getting to or maintaining a healthy weight.
  5. Ask your provider about a schedule for resuming normal activities, such as going back to work, driving and sexual activity.
  6. Join a support group or talk with a mental health professional if you’re feeling angry, afraid or sad.
  7. Call 911 if you’re experiencing chest pain that doesn’t go away in a few minutes with rest or after you take medicine.
