Before you leave
Tell your healthcare provider where you’re going and how long you will be away, especially if you will be traveling for an extended period. People over age 65 are particularly vulnerable to flu complications, so if you didn’t get your vaccination last fall, ask your healthcare provider if you can get a catch-up shot now.
Not only should you remember to take along all prescribed medications but bring a few extra doses, too. Store medications in your carry-on bag in case your luggage is lost. Carry a letter from your doctor describing any medical conditions you might have.
Planes, trains and automobiles
Do you feel queasy when you’re on the move? No matter the mode of travel, you can counteract motion sickness by going to an area where movement is less detectable, like the center of the ship or plane. And always face forward.
To prevent swollen ankles and calves, which can develop if you sit too long, get out of the car or walk through the airplane cabin every hour. This will encourage normal blood circulation and prevent blood clots.
Once you’re there
Take your front-row seats on the beach—but be prepared to ward off sunburn and heat exhaustion:
- Apply sunscreen.
- Drink plenty of liquids.
- Dress in light, loose layers. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
