Complementary medicine to support health and wellness.
Acupuncture is a complementary medicine based on the theory that energy, called chi, flows through and around your body along pathways called meridians. Acupuncture helps to remove blockages to the flow of chi in the body. This in turn helps the body to function in a more balanced way and supports the body’s natural ability to heal. Results are achieved by inserting very thin needles into the skin at certain points of the body to influence the energy flow. Sometimes heat, pressure, light, or mild electrical current is used along with needles.
Using a Japanese style of acupuncture, Dr. Olson uses the palpitation of reflexes on the body (areas of pain, tightness and asymmetry) to diagnose underlying disorders and to determine the best treatment according to acupuncture principles. Acupuncture may be used as a primary treatment modality or as part of an integrated treatment approach with providers of other specialties, depending on the underlying diagnoses and symptoms. Studies have shown that acupuncture is useful in the treatment of nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy and post surgery pain, headaches and migraines, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, low back pain, asthma, sinusitis, gastrointestinal disorders and more.
Acupuncture treatments are offered through the Specialty Medicine Department at CMC/DHK. Dr. Olson and the providers at CMC/DHK are dedicated to partnering with patients to determine the best care and treatment options for individuals and their families.
Self referrals are accepted. Please note that many insurance plans do not cover the cost of acupuncture treatments and CMC/DHK will not bill your insurance for this service. Out-of-pocket charges will be the responsibility of the patient.
